In Year 9 (age 13-14), the law changes its focus of your EHCP, onto preparing you for adult life. This is a mandatory legal requirement, not an optional extra, and when you are at your Year 11 (age 16) review, the school shouldn't just talk about exams and behaviour. According to the SEN Code of Practice section 8, they must document four specific areas for your future:
Higher Education/Employment: Exploring different jobs, apprenticeships, or university, and what support you need to get there.
Independent Living: Thinking about where you will live, how you will manage money, and what practical skills you need.
Participating in Society: Having friends, being part of your community, and accessing leisure activities.
Being Healthy: Moving from pediatric (child) health services to adult health services.
This plan isn't just a conversation; it must be documented in your EHCP and the Local Authority must ensure that your outcomes are "SMART" (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound) and focused on your long-term adult life.
If your school is ignoring your voice, then this your Power Phrase:
Under Chapter 8 of the SEND Code of Practice, this review must legally focus on 'Preparing for Adulthood.' I would like my EHCP to include the 4 specific outcomes and support I need for my transition to Employment / Independent Living / College.
